Girls Gone Dead #Netflix365

Girls Gone Dead is a teen scream flick.  A group of girls get to spend their first weekend without adult supervision at on of the girls fathers weekend house.  One by one each of the cast is taken out by a masked, ax wielding robed assailant.  That’s it, the whole story.  The movie uses a mix of new actors and non actor celebrities.  The celebrities used include, Jerry “The King” Lawler, Penthouse and adult film star Janessa Brazil, Ron Jeremy, Linnea Quigly (Scream Queen), Lester Green, and Sal Governale.  If you are not familiar with Lester or Sal, you may know them better as Beetlejuice and Sal “The Stockbroker” of Howard Stern fame.

All of the stars listed had a very limited role in the film, but did add extra “flavor” to the film that otherwise lacked.  Girls Gone Dead does create anything new in the slasher/horror film genre.  It does do a great job at copying and not messing up the formula of why these films continue to be made.  You get to see a bunch of people killed, have some laughs, and boobs.  The film is not necessarily a comedy but does deliver some laughs and you will laugh at the horror of the film that is Girls Gone Dead (with boobs).

Tomorrow When the War Begins #Netflix365

Tomorrow When the War Begins is set in Australia.  A group of teens go off to “Hell” for a camping trip, “Hell” is a section of woods near their home.  The teens have a fun time on their trip.  During the night they see and hear a large armada of military planes flying over head, but do not really think twice about it.  The group returns to the closest home after a great weekend.  The home is empty.  They go to the next home same thing, there is no electricity, internet or phone service.  They begin to realize there was more to the planes that they first thought.  The see a fighter jet, one of theirs, racing towards them.  It is being pursued by enemy jets and is blown up in front of the teens.

The then see military vehicles searching homes.  At night they find the missing people at a camp in town.  They are being held captive by what appears to be a Japanese military force.  They try to make contact with someone in order to figure out what is going on.  They are spotted and fired upon by the occupying enemy.

If you have heard this story before, you have, Red Dawn, set here in the United States, is basically the same story.  Tomorrow When the War Begins is a good story (it was good in Red Dawn too), but the Australian Red Dawn is a better movie with a better production value than the 1984 predecessor.  The movie kept me entertained and was a good find on Netflix instant viewing.

The Comedy of Terrors #Netflix365

The Comedy of Terrors, a Vincent Price driven film that has Price as an undertaker.  His sidekick Peter Lorre, plays a creepy barnacle with a desire to be with Prices opera singing mate (she does sing and it is truly awful).  Business is not great for the undertaker, he only has one coffin that is used up until it is time to go into the ground, a pine box is then used to hold the unfortunate corpse when the family leaves and the “good” coffin is recycled.

When the owner of the building comes to call upon Price for his back rent of one year, Price must rustle up some new business.  What to do when no one is dying? Make a house call and create some business.  They pick the wrong house though, on sight it is perfect, rich family, old man, no problems.  Basil Rathbone plays Mr. Black an eccentric senior that is often mistaken for dead.

The Comedy of Terrors may have a less than excellent story, but is carried by the star power of the time.  The personalities of Price, Lorre and Rathbone are extremely entertaining.  Boris Karloff plays an almost comatose man who awakens for comedic value but is otherwise a movie prop.  I did enjoy this comedy of errors wrapped in The Comedy of Terrors.

House of Voices #Netflix365

In 1958 a young woman is sent to an orphanage.  The orphanage experienced a decline over the years, children had been dying.  The orphanage was being closed and the children sent away.  Remaining was the new woman, a cook and one last orphan who could not be placed due to her mental illness.  The new girl arrived with a secret.  Stories told to her by the last resident were that there were children living in the home, in secret.  The new girl begins to see and hear things out of the normal.

During the story you understand that the young woman may not be as innocent as she appears.  The woman is pregnant and is trying to keep it a secret.  She came to the orphanage to hide her shame.  I was stated that her last employer was responsible.  When she was unpacking she had a stethoscope, you would assume to hear the baby’s heart beat.  In a fit of rage and frustration she punches herself in the stomach, she uses the scope to listen for the baby and is frustrated when she does.  The last resident and the young woman become friends, one telling the other about the children in the home.  Is there really children in the home?  Are they ghost? Why are they there?

House of Voices is a slow moving tale of a house with a history.  It is a slow moving ghost story that never really explains itself completely.  Are the characters delusional and see things through a mental illness or because they want to see something (or is it really happening)?  The movie is in English but is set in France.  This is not a bad story but is slow moving.

The Grey #Netflix365

Oil rig workers are heading home after a tour in the middle of nowhere.  The plane they are in gets into some bad weather.  The plane crashes.  Among the survivors is Liam Neeson, he works for the oil company as a hunter.  His job was to keep predators away from the Roughnecks.  His hunting skills allows him to have some knowledge of survival.  He tries to band together the remaining survivors in order to escape the wintry terrain.  The group has to battle horrific climate, a lack of food and water, and each other.  The group is whittled down due to the horrible conditions, rough terrain and wolves.  The wolves get the better of the group on a few occasions.  It is almost supernatural how the pack is following the ailing survivors.  Do they reach help? Watch and find out.

One problem I had with The Grey was there is one scene where the have to cross a large cliff to another.  When they reach the other side the wolves are there too, the movie makes it seem like it is the same pack chasing the group.  How does the pack cross the cliff side?  Other than that the movie is full of great thrills.

Liam Neeson has become a prolific actor and has been able to be part of some great movies.  Liam Neeson is a great actor playing in some of my favorite roles.  Darkman, Zeus, Qui Gon, Ra’s Al Ghul, and many more.  Neeson has proven to be a man with a certain skill set.  When he says he is going to find you and kill you, you believe it.

Sleeping Dogs Lie #Netflix365

Sleeping Dogs Lie is a romantic comedy that shows a new couple on the verge of taking the next step in their relationship.  A woman is bringing her boyfriend home to meet her parents.  Everything is perfect, they both have their whole lives ahead of them.  The parents are a little overbearing, but the woman is someone who could never do wrong, her brother always in trouble.  The boyfriend wants to make sure there are no secrets between the young couple.  He bares his darkest sexual past.  He was hoping for quid pro quo having the woman reveal a secret about herself.  She did not want to participate, she stated there was nothing, but the boyfriend put a lot of pressure for her to say something.  Upon advise from her mother and friend, the woman decides that she will play along with the boyfriend and clear the air.  What is told to the boyfriend no one expected.  What could she have possibly told that would make the boyfriend leave, the parents want to disown her, and raise the n’er do well brother to be a good kid when compared to his perfect sister?

Bobcat Goldthwait writes and directs this off balance romcom.  The movie is done well with a decent story and good acting.  Bobcat has become more than the mush mouth screaming comic from the 80’s.  God Bless America is another movie directed by Bobcat that is one of the best movies I have seen on Netflix instant viewing.  Sleeping Dogs Lie shows how one act that happened along time ago can affect peoples perception of how they see you now.

Paranormal Activity 3 #Netflix365

The third installment of the Paranormal Activity franchise, Paranormal Activity 3,  is set in 1998.  A movie maker (unemployed works in the garage, has plenty of time on his hands) moves in with his girlfriend and her two young daughters.  A box of video tapes, these are things that old people used to watch movies on, is dropped off.  Because the franchise depends on it, The boyfriend video’s everything, they watch one tape, it is weird, but they do not think much of it.  They leave for ice cream or something and come home to a trashed house, the only thing missing is the box of video tapes, that used to belong to the woman’s grandmother.  I am sure you know by now , this is where creepy stuff starts happening.  The boyfriend becomes obsessed with researching the tapes and what he saw.  Thumping, banging and general noises begin, the boyfriend sets up video cameras up.  One time they actually catch an earthquake on the camera.  But other times they can see that the younger girl is speaking with an invisible person (imaginary friend) Toby.  The girl states that Toby is her friend and tells her stuff.  She can not say what stuff, because if she tells Toby can not guarantee the family will stay safe.  So after seeing like 10 things that would show them that there is definitely something wrong, they remain in the house.  The younger girl is sick and the woman and boyfriend take her to the doctor leaving the older girl with the boyfriends assistant who has seen the footage of all the creepy stuff.  What should they do?  Play “Bloody Mary”  where you say her name three times in a mirror with the lights off, when you turn the lights on she will appear and try to kill you.  Really?  So that does not go well.  More creepy stuff happens, they leave the house and go to the woman’s mothers house.  Things get worse.

Paranormal Activity began with a great premise and business model.  Create a low budget flick that uses subtle and not so subtle effects and a hand held video camera to document a haunting.  The movies are very effective in creating a feeling of unease in that you can see things happening when the characters do not.  The movies are effective in getting you into the film so when there is a loud noise, people scream and jump.  My dogs in particular get excited when something happens during these movies, which makes me even a little jumpy.  PA3 has a different ending than in others.  There is a paranormal aspect but is intensified by a more mortal and real element.  I wish there could have been more of an explanation of the other element but again the premise of the series is to see what happens through the perspective of the camera and not through the characters involved (non omnipotent).

My opinion is that the first PA is the best, it was a fresh idea, done well.  The following installments are repackaged, but are still better than a lot of other movies that are being made for 10 or 20 times the budget.

Drones #Netflix365

Drones is a workplace comedy drama.  At the office every day is the same for one office worker, wake up, go to work, do everything you can to make it through the day, go home.  The only highlight is his best friend and a woman that he gets to flirt with.  The day becomes bearable knowing that the two are there to distract him from “the daily grind.”  The routine finally gets broken up when the worker finally asks out the girl.  Then he walks into a supply room and finds his friend in a compromising position.  Do you know the people you work with?  I mean really know what they do and what they might be capable of?  Probably not, but what happens when you find out something that changes your perception of someone you think you know? and what if you found out something that could have catastrophic consequences (literally the end of the world)?

Drones is not just a workplace comedy drama (it is just not typical).  The story and premise are good.  The acting is decent with a strong direction.  Drones is a quirky independent film that I enjoyed very much.

Hunger #Netflix365

Five people wake up in a hole in the ground.  They all realize that they are loners with not many friends or family.  It is dark so they are “feeling” each other out to find out what is going on.  Each has a different personality and morality.  Then the lights come on.  The only communication they have with their captor is a not that states that the human body can survive without food for 30 days and a scalpel.   The captives can see they are being watched by cameras and there is a clock that moves once every twenty four hours.  On the surface it seems to be a rat maze experiment.  The “Scientist” watches and takes notes, never says anything.  Never actually interacting with the 5 victims.  Underlying the experiment, there is a side story of a boy who gets into a car accident with his mother.  He is trapped in the car and his mother is dead.  He was in the care for three weeks.  How did he survive? and Who is the “Scientist”?

So if you were in a cave with nothing to eat, how long would it take for you to lose the morals that you have now?  What happens when the group is split on how survival will happen.  Do you keep your humanity or do you slip into some kind of animal or caveman person?  Hunger is a decent movie that demonstrates humanity on the side of the captives and the captor.  Decent production, writing was good and the story kept my interest until the end.

Ravenous is a civil war tale staring Guy Pearce.  During a battle (massacre) where the Union was on the losing end, Pearce hides in a pile of dead bodies.  While on the bottom of the pile he gets a taste for blood.  Ravenous is a great cannibal story.  It is not on instant, but can be mailed by Netflix or you can probably find in a bargain bin somewhere you buy DVD.  It is worth a watch.
